John R. Clements was born in County Armagh, Ireland 28 November 1868 and was brought to the United States at the age of two years. He worked at the age of thirteen as a retail grocery clerk and had a successful wholesale grocery business. He began writing poetry when he was young. Instances of the hymn being credited to Civilla D. Martin are in error. The copyright was registered 29 December 1902 by W.E.M. Hackleman, songwriters Jno. R. Clements and Chas. H. Gabriel, as printed in the Catalogue of Title Entries, First Quarter 1903, p. 92. Martin did not start publishing hymns until 1905.
