Videt Richard Polk was born on a farm near Pearl River, Louisiana. Despite an early life of hardship, he attended the Stamps-Baxter singing schools whenever he could and taught his first singing school at age 15. He would later become a field representative of the company. Polk organized the Alabama-Louisiana-Mississippi Tri-State Convention at Bogalusa, Louisiana in 1940, and was twice president of the National Singing Convention. In 1956 he organized the Gospel Singers of America School of Music, a summer program located at Pass Christian, Mississippi.
