1 Humility, the noblest virtue,
O dear Lord, wilt Thou grant to me.
For while my earthly years continue,
It is of great necessity.
O, grant always, my God, to me
True meekness and simplicity.
2 O lamb of God, let me learn meekness,
Submission, calm, serenity.
Remove all trace of doubt and weakness,
Let me more closely follow Thee.
And, as a shield, grant Thou to me
Thy meekness and humility!
3 Give me a heart with good intention,
With patience, meekness, friendliness;
To poor and lonely souls, compassion;
A heart with pity, tenderness.
When I must face adversity,
Let meekness be a cloak for me.
4 Lord, help me then Thy ways to follow,
To bear my burden willingly.
Grant me strong faith today, tomorrow,
And, child-like, let me e'er heed Thee
That I with all true souls may stand
And take Thy holy sacrament.
