வீழ்ந்தே உம் பாதமே அண்டினேன்,
வெள்ளம் போல் சூழ்ந்ததே சோதனை,
நடுங்கும் என்னை காத்திடும்.

2 நண்பர் இல்லார்க்கும் நண்பன் நீர்,
வேறெங்கே வேதனை கூறிடுவேன்,
உம் வாசல் திறந்தே தோன்றுதே,
திக்கற்றோர் ஏழைகள் வரவேற்க.

3 துக்கத்தில் உம்மிடம் புலம்பினோம்,
பக்கத்தில் வந்து நீர் பலம் தர,
உம் வாக்கு என்றென்றும் நிலையன்றோ?
வேண்டுவோர் வேண்டல் வீணாமோ?

4 நீர் தீர்க்கா துயரம் ஏதுமுண்டோ?
கேளாதொழிந்த ஜெபமுண்டோ?
ஜெபத்தைகேட்டு பதில் தந்து,
என் பாரம் யாவும் சுமந்தீரே.

5 எனக்கு நீர் மாத்ரம் போதுமே,
எனக்காய் வாதிடும் வல்லவர் நீர்,
உலகோடிசைந்தோர் அறியாரே,
என்னைப்போல் யார் உண்டவர்கட்கு.

6 மறந்தெரிந்த ஏழை நான்,
ஆனால் என் தேவன் நீர் மறவாமல்,
சேர்த்து காத்து வழி காட்டி,
வாக்கு தந்தீர் என் துணையானீர்.

William Cowper (pronounced "Cooper"; b. Berkampstead, Hertfordshire, England, 1731; d. East Dereham, Norfolk, England, 1800) is regarded as one of the best early Romantic poets. To biographers he is also known as "mad Cowper." His literary talents produced some of the finest English hymn texts, but his chronic depression accounts for the somber tone of many of those texts. Educated to become an attorney, Cowper was called to the bar in 1754 but never practiced law. In 1763 he had the opportunity to become a clerk for the House of Lords, but the dread of the required public examination triggered his tendency to depression, and he attempted suicide. Born: July 12, 1960, Danish Mission Hospital, Tirukovilur, Tamil Nadu, India. A fourth-generation Christian, Barathi is the son of E. Soundararajan (1932–1997), a Presbyterian pastor in Chennai for 47 years, and Ruby Viruthambal, and husband of Evelyn Priscilla Vasanthi. In 1986, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology (and passed Grade VIII Classical Guitar, Trinity College Exams at the Chennai Local Center). In 1989, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Church Music from the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music in Manila, Philippines.
