1 Another day begun!
Lord, grant us grace that we,
Before the setting of the sun,
Redeem the time for Thee.

2 Another day of toil!
To Thee we yield our powers;
Keep Thou our souls from guilty soil
Through all the passing hours.

3 Another day of fear!
For watchful is our foe,
And sin is strong, and death is near,
And short our time below.

4 Another day of hope!
For Thou art with us still,
And Thine almighty strength can cope
with all who seek our ill.

5 Another day of grace
To help us on our way!
One step towards the resting-place,
The eternal Sabbath-day.

Author: John Ellerton

John Ellerton (b. London, England, 1826; d. Torquay, Devonshire, England, 1893) Educated at King William's College on the Isle of Man and at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1851. He served six parishes, spending the longest time in Crewe Green (1860-1872), a church of steelworkers and farmers. Ellerton wrote and translated about eighty hymns, many of which are still sung today. He helped to compile Church Hymns and wrote its handbook, Notes and Illustrations to Church Hymns (1882). Another day begun! J. Ellerton. [Tuesday.] Written Feb. 13, 1871. Appeared in theParish Magazine for May, 1871, as one of three "Week Day Hymns," in 5 stanzas of 4 lines, and appointed for Tuesday. During the same year it was included in Church Hymns, No. 56, with stanza ii., 1. 3, "sinful soil" changed to “guilty soil," and stanza v. altered from the original, which read:—

"Another day of grace!
To bring us on our way,
One step towards our resting-place,
The endless Sabbath-day."

In 1882 the revised text was repeated in Thring's Collection, with stanza ii. 1.3 re-written "And let not sin our conscience soil," by the editor. Authorised text in Church Hymns.
