The backslider's prayer

Hymnal: A Selection of Psalms and Hymns #CCLXXX (1790) Topics: Backslider's Prayer First Line: Hear me, O Redeemer, hear Lyrics: 1 Hear me, O Redeemer, hear, My huble suit receive; While I all my wants declare, And how unhel'd I griev; JESUS master I have sinn'd, My sol hath greatly gone astray, Dear Redeemer be my friend, And bring me on my way. 2 I am hungry all my cry, Is for the living bread; Neither have I ought to buy, Nor any thing to plead: Helpless begging at the door, I ask the food that came from heav'n, See me needy, lost, and poor, And let relief be giv'n. 3 Hidden manna, Lord, reveal, For this behold I pant; Let thine ears consider well The voice of my complaint; Let the tree of life relieve A weary traveller near to die; May it plese thee, Lord, to give, To one who cannot buy. 4 Empty send me not away, For I am come from far; do not, dearest Lord, delay, And leave me to dispair; Give me of thy flesh to eat, O! let me of thy nature share; At thy banquet take my seat, And feast for ever there. The backslider's prayer

Hymnal: A Selection of Psalms and Hymns #CCLXXIX (1790) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.8.7.6 Topics: Backslider's Prayer First Line: Jesus, let thy pitying eye Lyrics: 1 Jesus, let thy pitying eye Call back a wand'ring sheep; False to thee, like Peter, I Would fain like Peter, weep; Let me be by grace restor'd, On me be all its freeness shewn; Turn and look upon me, LORD, And break my heart of stone. 2 Saviour prince, enthron'd above, Repentance to impart, Give me thro' thy dying love, The humble contrite heart; Give, what I have long implor'd, A portion of thy grief unknown; Turn and look upon me, LORD, And break my heart of stone. 3 See me, Saviour, from above, Nor suffer me to die; Life, and happiness, and love, Drop from thy gracious eye; Speak the reconciling word And let thy mercy melt me down; Turn and look upon me, LORD, And break my heart of stone. 4 Look as when thy pitying eye, Was clos'd that we might live; Father (at the point to die, My Saviour gasp'd) "Forgive!" Surely with that dying word, He turns, and looks, and cries, "'tis done!" O my loving, bleeding LORD< Thou breaks my heart of stone. Languages: English

The Backslider's Return

Hymnal: The Hartford Selection of Hymns from the Most Approved Authors #CLXII (1799) Topics: Backslider his return First Line: O thou, my God, who from thy throne supreme Lyrics: 1 O thou my GOD, who from thy throne supreme, Art mindful of the penitential tear, Kindly dispersing, with thy mercy's beam, The gath'ring clouds of darkness and despair; Lord, lend thine ear! O hear a sinner's cry! And save a wretch thy law condemns to die! 2 Long has thy gospel sounded in mine ears, And once I tho't I made thy ways my choice; But now, alas! o'erwhelm'd with gloomy fears, I scarce can hear my heav'nly shepherd's voice; Oh shine again! revive my drooping heart! Subdue my foes, and bid my fears depart! 3 Entangles with the world's delusive charms, Mine enemies against my soul prevail; Prevail to thrust me, wretched, from thine arms, Whilst guilt and unbelief my hope assail. O GOD, my GOD, display thy guardian cure, Nor let me fall a victim to despair! 4 Does not thy promise bid me rest secure? And can I trust thy faithfulness in vain? Shall not thy truth from age to age endure? And wilt thou not thy people's cause maintain? Then shine again, my fainting soul restore, And hold me with thy hand to fall no more! Languages: English

Weary of wandering from my God

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #415 (1828) Meter: Irregular Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning; The returning Backslider Lyrics: 1 Weary of wandering from my God, And now made willing to return, I hear, and bow me to the rod: For thee, not without hope, I mourn; I have an Advocate above, A Friend before the Throne of Love. 2 O Jesus, full of truth and grace, More full of grace than I of sin; Yet once again I seek thy face, Open thine arms and take me in! And freely my backslidings heal, And love the faithless sinner still. 3 Thou know'st the way to bring me back, My fallen spirit to restore; O! for thy truth and mercy's sake! Forgive and bid me sin no more: The ruins of my soul repair, And make my heart a House of Prayer. 4 The stone to flesh again convert: The veil of sin once more remove! Sprinkle thy blood upon my heart, And melt it by thy dying love! This rebel heart by love subdue, And make it soft and make it new. 5 Give to mine eyes refreshing tears, And kindle my relentings now; Fill all my soul with filial fears: To thy sweet yoke my spirit bow: Bend by the grace, O bend or break The iron sinews in my neck! Ah, where am I now!

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn Book #CCVII (1791) Topics: Backslider Lyrics: 1 Ah, where am I now! When was it, or how That I fell from my heaven of grace? I am brought into thrall, I am stript of my All, I am banish'd from Jesus's face. 2 Hardly yet do I know How I let my Lord go, So insensibly starting aside: When the tempter came in With his own subtle sin, And infected my spirit with pride. 3 But I felt it too soon, That my Saviour was gone, Swiftly vanishing out of my sight; My triumph and boast On a sudden were lost, And my day it was turn'd into night. 4 Only pride could destroy That innocent joy, And make my Redeemer depart; But whate'er was the cause, I lament the sad loss, For the veil is come over my heart. 5 Ah! wretch that I am! I can only exclaim, Like a devil tormented within: My Saviour is gone, And has left me alone To the fury of Satan and sin. 6 Nothing now can relieve, Without comfort I grieve, I have lost all my peace and my pow'r; No access do I find To the friend of mankind; I can ask for his mercy no more. 7 Tongue cannot declare The torment I bear, (While no end of my troubles I see) Only Adam could tell On the day that he fell, And was turn'd out of Eden, like me. 8 Driven out from my God, I wander abroad, Thro' a desert of sorrows I rove; And how great is my pain, That I cannot regain My Eden of Jesus' love! 9 I never shall rise To my first paradise, Or come my Redeemer to see: But I feel a faint hope That at last he will stoop, And his pity shall bring him to me. How happy are they

He hath loved me, I cried, He hath suffer'd and died, To redeem such a rebel as me. 5 On the wings of his love I was carry'd above All sin, and temptation, and pain; I could not believe That I ever should grieve That I ever should suffer again. 6 I rode on the sky, Freely justify'd I! Nor envy'd Elijah his seat: My soul mounted higher In a chariot of fire, And the moon it was under my feet. 7 Oh! the rapturous height Of that holy delight, Which I felt in the life-giving blood! Of my Saviour possest, I was perfectly blest, As if fill'd with the fulness of God. Languages: English

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn Book #CCVIII (1791) Topics: Backslider Lyrics: 1 How shall a lost sinner in pain, Recover his forfeited peace? When brought into bondage again, What hope of a second release? O Thou that hear'st when sinners cry

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LI.III (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Backslider Restored Lyrics: 14 O Thou that hear'st when sinners cry, Tho' all my crimes before thee lie, Behold them not with angry look, But blot their mem'ry from thy book. 15 Create my nature pure within, And form my soul averse to sin: Let thy good spirit ne'er depart Nor hide thy presence from my heart. 16 I cannot live without thy light, Cast out and banish'd from thy sight; Thy holy joys, my God restore And guard me that I fall no more. 17 Though I have griev'd thy spirit Lord, Thy help and comfort still afford, And let a wretch come near thy throne To plead the merits of thy Son. 18 A broken heart my God, my King, Is all the sacrifice I bring; The God of grace will ne'er despise A broken heart for sacrifice. 19 My soul lies humbled in the dust, And owns thy dreadful sentence just, Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye And save the soul condemn'd to die. 20 Then will I teach the world thy ways; Sinners shall learn thy sov'reign grace; I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood, And they shall praise a pard'ning God. 21 O may thy love inspire my tongue! Salvation shall be all my song; And all my pow'rs shall join to bless The Lord my strength and righteousness. Scripture: Psalm 51:14-19 Languages: English

Where is my God, my joy, my hope

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #CCIX (1788) Topics: Backslider For the Morning Lyrics: 1 Where is my God, my joy, my hope The dear desire of nations where? Jesus, to thee my soul looks up, To thee directs her morning prayer; And spreads her arms of faith abroad, To embrace my hope, my joy, my God! 2 Mine eyes prevent the morning ray, Looking, and longing for thy word: Come, O my Jesus, come away, And let my heart receive its Lord; Which pants and struggles to be free, And breaks to be detain'd from thee. 3 Appear in me bright Morning-Star, And scatter all the shades of night! I saw thee once, and came from far, But quickly lost thy transient light; And now again in darkness pine, Till thou throughout my nature shine. 4 In patient hope I now take heed To the sure word of promis'd grace, Whose rays a feeble lustre shed, Faint, glimmering through the darksome place; Till thou thy glorious light impart, And rise, the Day-Star in my heart. 5 Come, Lord, be manifested here, And all the devil's works destroy; Now without sin in me appear, And fill with everlasting joy: Thy beatific face display, Thy presence is the perfect day. I left the God of truth and light

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #171 (1854) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backslider returning to God Lyrics: I left the God of truth and light, I left the God who gave me breath, To wander in the wilds of night, And perish in the snares of death. Sweet was His service, and His yoke Was light and easy to be borne; Through all His bands of love I broke, I cast away His gifts with scorn. 174 I danced in folly's giddy maze, And drank the sea, and chased the wind; But falsehood lurk'd in all her ways, Her laughter left remorse behind. I dream'd of bliss in pleasure's bowers, While pillowing roses stayed my head; But serpents hiss'd among the flowers; I woke, and thorns were all my bed. In riches, when I sought for joy, And placed in sordid gain my trust, I found that gold was all alloy, And worldly treasure--fleeting dust. I woo'd ambition, climb'd the pole, And shone among the stars,--but fell, Headlong in all my pride of soul, Like Lucifer, from heaven to hell. Heart-broken, friendless, poor, cast down, Where shall the chief of sinners fly, Almighty Vengeance! from thy frown-- Eternal Justice! from thine eye? Lo, through the gloom of guilty fears, My faith discerns a dawn of grace; The Sun of Righteousness appears In Jesus' reconciling face. My suffering, slain, and risen Lord, In sore distress I turn to Thee, I claim acceptance on Thy word, My God! my God! forsake not me. Prostrate before the mercy seat, I dare not, if I would, despair; None ever perish'd at Thy feet, And I will lie for ever there. Scripture: 2 Samuel 12:13 Languages: English

Depth of mercy! can there be

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #413 (1828) Meter: Irregular Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 Depth of mercy! can there be Mercy still reserv'd for me? Can my God his wrath forbear? Me, the chief of sinners, spare? 2 I have long withstood his grace: Long provok'd him to his face; Would not hearken to his calls; Griev'd him by a thousand falls. 3 Kindled His relentings are, Me he now delights to spare, Cries, "How shall I give thee up?" Lets the lifted thunder drop. 4 There for me the Saviour stands, Shows his wounds and spreads his hands: God is love! I know, I feel! Jesus weeps, but loves me still! 5 Jesus answer from above: Is not all thy nature love? Wilt thou not the wrong forget? Suffer me to kiss thy feet? 6 Now incline me to repent! Let me now my fall lament! Now my foul revolt deplore! Weep, believe, and sin no more. Scripture: Psalm 77:8

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #417 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 Dear Jesus, let thy pitying eye Call back a wand'ring sheep; False to my vows, like Peter, I Would fain, like Peter, weep. 2 Now let me be by grace restor'd, To me thy mercy shown; Oh turn and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 3 Almighty Prince, enthron'd above, Repentance to impart, Grant, thro' the greatness of thy love, The humble, contrite heart. 4 Give, what I should have long implor'd, A taste of love unknown; Oh, turn and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 5 Behold me, Saviour, from above, Nor suffer me to die; For life, and happiness, and love Smile in thy gracious eye. 6 Speak but the reconciling word; Let mercy melt me down; Oh, turn and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone.

O that I were as heretofore!

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #418 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 O that I were as heretofore! When warm in my first love; I only live my God t'adore, And seek the things above! 2 Upon my head his candle shone, And lavish of his grace, With cords of love he drew me on, And half unveil'd his face. 3 Far, far above all earthly things Triumphantly I rode; I soar'd to heaven on eagles' wings, And found and talk'd with God. 4 Where am I now, from what a height Of happiness cast down! The glory swallow'd up in night, And faded is the crown. 5 O God, thou art my home, my rest, For which I sigh in pain! How shall I 'scape into thy breast, My Eden how regain?

Jesus, my Saviour and my God

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #419 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 Jesus, my Saviour and my God, Thou hast redeem'd me with thy blood; By ties, both natural and divine, I am, and ever will be thine. 2 But ah! should my inconstant heart, Ere I'm aware, from thee depart, What dire reproach would fall on me For such ingratitude to thee! 3 The thought I dread, the crime I hate; The guilt, the shame, I deprecate: And yet so mighty are my foes, I dare not trust my warmest vows. 4 Pity my frailty, dearest Lord! Grace in the needful hour afford: O steel this tim'rous heart of mine With fortitude and love divine. 5 So shall I triumph o'er my fears, And gather joys from all my tears; So shall I to the world proclaim The honours of the Christian name.

Backsliding and returning; or, the backslider's Prayer

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCCXIII (1792) Topics: Backslidings and Returns; Christian Backsliding and returning First Line: Jesus let thy pitying eye Lyrics: 1 Jesus let thy pitying eye Call back a wand'ring sheep; False to my vows, like Peter, I Would fain like Peter weep. Let me be by grace restor'd, On me be all its freeness shewn; Turn and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 2 Savior, prince, enthron'd above, Repentance to impart, Give me, thro' thy dying love, The humble, contrite heart; Give, what I have long implor'd, A portion of thy grief unknown; Turn and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 3 See me, Savior, from above, Nor suffer me to die; Life and happiness, and love, Smile in thy gracious eye; Speak the reconciling word, And let thy mercy melt me down; Turn and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 4 Look, as when thy pitying eye Was clos'd that we might live; "Father (at the point to die, My Savior gasp'd) forgive!" Surely with thy dying word, He turns, and looks, and cries, "'Tis done!" O! my loving, bleeding Lord, This breaks my heart of stone. Languages: English

Backsliding and Forgiveness; or, Sin punished and Saints saved

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #139 (1786) Topics: Backsliding pardoned; Pardon of backsliding; Backsliding pardoned; Pardon of backsliding First Line: Great God, how oft did Israel prove Lyrics: 1 Great God, how oft did Israel prove By turns thine anger, and thy love? There is a glass our hearts may see How fickle and how false they be. 2 How soon the faithless Jews forgot The dreadful wonders God had wrought? Then they provoke him to his face, Nor fear his power, nor trust his grace. 3 The Lord consum'd their years in pain, And made their travels long and vain; A tedious march through unknown ways Wore out their strength, and spent their days. 4 Oft when they saw their brethren slain, They mourn'd, and sought the Lord again; Call'd him the rock of their abode, Their high Redeemer, and their God. 5 Their prayers and vows before him rise As flattering words or solemn lies, While their rebellious tempers prove False to his covenant and his love. 6 Yet could his sovereign grace forgive The men who not deserv'd to live; His anger oft away he turn'd, Or else with gentle flame it burn'd. 7 He saw their flesh was weak and frail, He saw temptations still prevail; The God of Abraham lov'd them still, And led them to his holy hill.
