Jesus shall reign where-e'er the Sun

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P72b (1766) Topics: Christ his Kingdom among Gentiles; Gentiles given to Christ; Gentiles given to Church Lyrics: 1 Jesus shall reign where-e'er the Sun Does his successive Journies run; His Kingdom stretch from Shore to Shore, Till Moons shall wax and wane no more. 2 [Behold the Islands, with their Kings, And Europe her best Tribute brings; From North to South the Princes meet, To pay their Homage at his Feet. 3 There Persia, glorious to behold, There India shines in Eastern Gold; And barb'rous Nations at his Word Submit, and bow, and own their Lord.] 4 For him shall endless Pray'r be made, And Praises throng to crown his Head; His Name like sweet Perfume shall rise With ev'ry Morning Sacrifice. 5 People and Realms of ev'ry Tongue Dwell on his Love with sweetest Song, And Infant-Voices shall proclaim Their early Blessings on his Name. 6 Blessings abound where'er he reigns, The Pris'ner leaps to lose his Chains; The weary find eternal Rest, And all the Sons of Want are blest. 7 [Where he displays his healing Pow'r, Death and the Curse are known no more; In him the Tribes of Adam boast More Blessings than their Father lost. 8 Let ev'ry Creature rise and bring Peculiar Honours to our King: Angels descend with Songs again, And Earth repeat the loud Amen.] Scripture: Psalm 72 Languages: English

I hate the tempter and his charms

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #92 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Gentiles given to Christ; Gentiles church; Christ his kingdom among the Gentiles Lyrics: I hate the tempter and his charms, I hate his flatt'ring breath; The serpent takes a thousand forms To cheat our souls to death. He feeds our hopes with airy dreams, Or kills with slavish fear; And holds us still in wide extremes, Presumption or despair. Now he persuades, "How easy 'tis To walk the road to heav'n;" Anon he swells our sins, and cries, "They cannot be forgiv'n." [He bids young sinners "yet forbear To think of God, or death; For prayer and devotion are But melancholy breath." He tells the aged, "they must die, "And 'tis too late to pray; In vain for mercy now they cry, For they have lost their day."] Thus he supports his cruel throne By mischief and deceit, And drags the sons of Adam down To darkness and the pit. Almighty God, cut short his power, Let him in darkness dwell And that he vex the earth no more, Confine him down to hell. Scripture: Psalm 72 Languages: English

The Kingdom of Christ

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #127a (1740) Topics: Christ his Kingdom among Gentiles; Gentiles given to Christ; Gentiles given to Church First Line: Great God, whose universal Sway Lyrics: 1 Great GOD, whose universal Sway The known and unknown Worlds obey, Now give the Kingdom to thy Son, Extend his Pow'r, exalt his Throne. 2 Thy Sceptre well becomes his Hands, All Heav'n submits to his Commands; His Justice shall avenge the Poor, And Pride and Rage prevail no more. 3 With Pow'r be vindicates the Just, And treads th' Oppressor in the Dust; His Worship and his Fear shall last, Till Hours, and Years, and Time be past. 4 As Rain on Meadows newly mown, So shall he send his Influence down; His Grace on fainting Souls distils, Like heav'nly Dew on thirsty Hills. 5 The Heathen Lands that lie beneath The Shades of overspreading Death, Revive at his first dawning Light, And Deserts blossom at the Sight. 6 The Saints shall flourish in his Days, Drest in the Robes of Joy and Praise; Peace, like a River, from his Throne, Shall flow to Nations yet unknown. Lo! the destroying angel flies

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #143 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Gentiles given to Christ; Gentiles church; Christ his kingdom among the Gentiles Lyrics: Lo, the destroying angel flies To Pharaoh's stubborn land; The pride and flower of Egypt dies By his vindictive hand. He passed the tents of Jacob o'er, Nor poured the wrath divine; He saw the blood on every door, And blessed the peaceful sign. Thus the appointed Lamb must bleed, To break the Egyptian yoke; Thus Isr'el is from bondage freed, And 'scapes the angel's stroke. Lord, if my heart were sprinkled too With blood so rich as thine, Justice no longer would pursue This guilty soul of mine. Jesus our passover was slain, And has at once procured Freedom from Satan's heavy chain, And God's avenging sword. Scripture: Psalm 72 Languages: English

Saviour, sprinkle many nations

Author: Bp. A. C. Coxe, 1818-1896 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #294 (1917) Topics: Gentiles Prayed for; Gentiles Prayed for Lyrics: 1 Saviour, sprinkle many nations, Fruitful let Thy sorrows be; By Thy pains and consolations Draw the Gentiles unto Thee; Of Thy cross the wondrous story Be to all the nations told; Let them see Thee in Thy glory, And Thy mercy manifold. 2 Far and wide, though all unknowing, Yearns for Thee each mortal breast; Human tears for Thee are flowing, Human hearts in Thee would rest; Thirsting, as for dews of even, As the new-mown grass for rain, Thee they seek, as God of heaven, Thee, as man for sinners slain. 3 Saviour, lo! the isles are waiting, Stretched the hand and strained the sight, For Thy Spirit, new creating, Love's pure flame, and wisdom's light; Give the Word and of the preacher Speed the foot, and touch the tongue, Till on earth by every creature Glory to the Lamb be sung. Psalm 45

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.100 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Church of the Gentiles; Gentiles church First Line: My Savior and my King Lyrics: My Savior and my King, Thy beauties are divine; Thy lips with blessings overflow, And every grace is thine. Now make thy glory known, Gird on thy dreadful sword, And ride in majesty to spread The conquests of thy word. Strike through thy stubborn foes, Or melt their hearts t' obey, While justice, meekness, grace, and truth, Attend thy glorious way. Thy laws, O God, are right; Thy throne shall ever stand; And thy victorious gospel proves A sceptre in thy hand. [Thy Father and thy God Hath without measure shed His Spirit, like a joyful oil, T' anoint thy sacred head.] [Behold, at thy right hand The Gentile church is seen, Like a fair bride in rich attire, And princes guard the queen.] Fair bride, receive his love, Forget thy father's house; Forsake thy gods, thy idol gods, And pay thy Lord thy vows. O let thy God and King Thy sweetest thoughts employ; Thy children shall his honors sing In palaces of joy. Scripture: Psalm 45 Languages: English
