Fruit farmer and horse breeder from Berlin Heights, OH. He was also a spiritualist and a writer. Although he had very little formal schooling, his writings, which he claimed were given to him by the spirits, were quoted by Charles Darwin and Ludwig Buchner. He was married to Emma Rood Hudson
