A clock mak­er and sil­ver smith, Davis grew up in New­ber­ry County, South Car­o­li­na, and appears in the 1850 and 1860 censuses there. By 1870, he and his wife Me­lin­da had moved in with their daugh­ter in Con­cord, South Car­o­li­na, and were liv­ing there through at least 1880.
