143. Evening Prayer

1 Now night comes on,
The sun is gone
A-down the distant west;
Father, I pray,
Bid angel's stay
To guard me while I rest.

2 'Tis by thy might,
The stars so bright
Are held, each in its place;
O, keep the child
From path defiled,
That I may see thy face.

3 Soon death's dark night,
Shall quench the light,
Then, for His sake who died,
Bid angels stand,
With gentle hand,
To bear me to thy side.
