Born in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, Daniel Thambyrajah Niles was an ordained Methodist minister. He served as president of the East Asia Christian Conference and as evangelism secretary of the World YMCA in Geneva. The mantra-like 'saranam' means 'I take refuge'
