1 Curst be the man, forever curst,
"That doth one wilful sin commit;
"Death and damnation for the first,
Without relief that's infinite.

2 Thus Sinai roars around the earth
Thunder, and fire, and vengeance flings;
But Jesus, thy dear gasping breath,
And Calvary says gentler things.

3 Pardon and grace, and boundless love
Streaming along a Saviour's blood;
And peace, and joy, and crowns above,
Dear purchas'd by a bleeding God.

4 Did ever pity stoop so low,
Dress'd in divinity and blood;
Was ever rebels courted so,
By groans of an expiring God,

5 Hark! how he prays! the charming sound
Dwells on his dying lips, – forgive;
And ev'ry groan and gaping wound,
Cries, Father let the rebels live.

6 Go ye that rest upon the law,
And toil and seek salvation there;
Look to the flames that Moses saw,
And sink, and tremble, and despair.

7 But I'll retire beneath the cross;
Jesus at thy dear feet I'll lie;
And the keen sword that justice draws,
Flaming and red shall pass me by.
